Sieve mesh is usually woven from spring steel wire, as this is a particularly wear-resistant, shock-resistant, tough material. Stainless steel mesh is also used for certain purposes: its rustproof qualities and toughness yield an excellent sieve mesh for many applications, especially when sieving corrosive substances. Stainless steel mesh is also often preferable for sieves which are not used for long periods, whose quality deteriorates substantially owing to rusting.
